    A qualitative exploration of the impact of personal development in counselling training on the student counsellor's significant relationships: Should counsellor training come with a stronger warning or more support?

    A small scale qualitative research study set out to explore the impact of the personal development element of counsellor training on the student counsellors’ significant relationship. Six qualified counsellors shared their own experiences of training, and the impact it had on their relationships, in a semi-structured, one to one interview. The data gathered was subjected to a form of grounded theory. The study concluded that the personal development element does have an impact on students’ relationships; some survived and others ended. Whilst this was generally perceived by the participants as positive, the study found a number of factors, resulting from personal development in counselling training, which did contribute to various stresses being placed on the participants’ relationships

    Application of Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment equations to the Thai population

    Objective: The objectives of this study are: 1.) To calculate the probability of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) events by applying three different equations, which are: the Asia-Pacific Cohort Study (APCS) equation, the Framingham-Asia equation and the original Framingham equation, to the individual risk factors data from the NHESIV, Thailand. 2) To estimate the number of 8-10 years CVD events. 3) To validate and identify the most suitable CVD risk equations for the Thai population. The individual risk factors from the NHESIV dataset was entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as the baseline population. Methods: Asia-Pacific Collaborative Cohort Study (APCCS) equations, the Framingham-Asia equation and the original Framingham equation, are applied to calculate the probability of 8 to 10 years CVD events by age groups and gender. The CVD events in this analysis refer to all fatal and non-fatal CVD events (ICD10, I00-I99), which include Ischemic heart disease (IHD) (ICD10, I20-I25) and stroke (ICD10, I60-I69). Results: The 4th National Health Examination Survey IV 2009 (NHESIV) dataset has been entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as the baseline population. APCCS, the Framingham-Asia and the original Framingham equations, were applied to the NHESIV dataset. The APCCS equation calculated the average 8-years probability of getting CVD as 8.3% in men and 7.8% in women. The 8-year likelihood of CVD in the Framingham-Asia equation was 7.2% in men and 8.1% in women. The original Framingham equation showed the highest probability of 10-years CVD which were 18.8% in men and 11.1% in women. Conclusions: The original Framingham equation overestimated the risk of CVD in the Thai population in all age groups. The Asia-Pacific Cohort Study (APCCS) and the Framingham-Asia equations, both performed better estimation than the original Framingham equation in both men and women

    KELT-6b: A P ~ 7.9 Day Hot Saturn Transiting a Metal-poor Star with a Long-period Companion

    We report the discovery of KELT-6b, a mildly inflated Saturn-mass planet transiting a metal-poor host. The initial transit signal was identified in KELT-North survey data, and the planetary nature of the occulter was established using a combination of follow-up photometry, high-resolution imaging, high-resolution spectroscopy, and precise radial velocity measurements. The fiducial model from a global analysis including constraints from isochrones indicates that the V = 10.38 host star (BD+31 2447) is a mildly evolved, late-F star with T_(eff_ = 6102 ± 43 K,_log g_* =4.07_(-0.07)^(+0.04), and [Fe/H] = –0.28 ± 0.04, with an inferred mass M_* = 1.09 ± 0.04 M_☉ and radius R_* =1.58_(-0.09)^(+0.16) ,R_☉. The planetary companion has mass M_P = 0.43 ± 0.05 M_(Jup), radius R_p =1.19_(-0.08)^(+0.13),R_(Jup), surface gravity g_p = 2.86_(-0.08)^(+0.06), and density P_p = 0.31_(-0.08)^(+0.07), cm^(-3). The planet is on an orbit with semimajor axis ɑ = 0.079 ± 0.001 AU and eccentricity e = 0.22_(-0.10)^(+0.12), which is roughly consistent with circular, and has ephemeris of T_c(BJD_(TDB)) = 2456347.79679 ± 0.00036 and P = 7.845631 ± 0.000046 days. Equally plausible fits that employ empirical constraints on the host-star parameters rather than isochrones yield a larger planet mass and radius by ~4}-7}. KELT-6b has surface gravity and incident flux similar to HD 209458b, but orbits a host that is more metal poor than HD 209458 by ~0.3 dex. Thus, the KELT-6 system offers an opportunity to perform a comparative measurement of two similar planets in similar environments around stars of very different metallicities. The precise radial velocity data also reveal an acceleration indicative of a longer-period third body in the system, although the companion is not detected in Keck adaptive optics images

    Fyn and PTP-PEST–mediated Regulation of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein (WASp) Tyrosine Phosphorylation Is Required for Coupling T Cell Antigen Receptor Engagement to WASp Effector Function and T Cell Activation

    Involvement of the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp) in promoting cell activation requires its release from autoinhibitory structural constraints and has been attributed to WASp association with activated cdc42. Here, however, we show that T cell development and T cell receptor (TCR)-induced proliferation and actin polymerization proceed normally in WASp−/− mice expressing a WASp transgene lacking the cdc42 binding domain. By contrast, mutation of tyrosine residue Y291, identified here as the major site of TCR-induced WASp tyrosine phosphorylation, abrogated induction of WASp tyrosine phosphorylation and its effector activities, including nuclear factor of activated T cell transcriptional activity, actin polymerization, and immunological synapse formation. TCR-induced WASp tyrosine phosphorylation was also disrupted in T cells lacking Fyn, a kinase shown here to bind, colocalize with, and phosphorylate WASp. By contrast, WASp was tyrosine dephosphorylated by protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP)-PEST, a tyrosine phosphatase shown here to interact with WASp via proline, serine, threonine phosphatase interacting protein (PSTPIP)1 binding. Although Fyn enhanced WASp-mediated Arp2/3 activation and was required for synapse formation, PTP-PEST combined with PSTPIP1 inhibited WASp-driven actin polymerization and synapse formation. These observations identify key roles for Fyn and PTP-PEST in regulating WASp and imply that inducible WASp tyrosine phosphorylation can occur independently of cdc42 binding, but unlike the cdc42 interaction, is absolutely required for WASp contributions to T cell activation

    Spitzer and z' Secondary Eclipse Observations of the Highly Irradiated Transiting Brown Dwarf KELT-1b

    We present secondary eclipse observations of the highly irradiated transiting brown dwarf KELT-1b. These observations represent the first constraints on the atmospheric dynamics of a highly irradiated brown dwarf, and the atmospheres of irradiated giant planets at high surface gravity. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, we measure secondary eclipse depths of 0.195+/-0.010% at 3.6um and 0.200+/-0.012% at 4.5um. We also find tentative evidence for the secondary eclipse in the z' band with a depth of 0.049+/-0.023%. These measured eclipse depths are most consistent with an atmosphere model in which there is a strong substellar hotspot, implying that heat redistribution in the atmosphere of KELT-1b is low. While models with a more mild hotspot or even with dayside heat redistribution are only marginally disfavored, models with complete heat redistribution are strongly ruled out. The eclipse depths also prefer an atmosphere with no TiO inversion layer, although a model with TiO inversion is permitted in the dayside heat redistribution case, and we consider the possibility of a day-night TiO cold trap in this object. For the first time, we compare the IRAC colors of brown dwarfs and hot Jupiters as a function of effective temperature. Importantly, our measurements reveal that KELT-1b has a [3.6]-[4.5] color of 0.07+/-0.11, identical to that of isolated brown dwarfs of similarly high temperature. In contrast, hot Jupiters generally show redder [3.6]-[4.5] colors of ~0.4, with a very large range from ~0 to ~1. Evidently, despite being more similar to hot Jupiters than to isolated brown dwarfs in terms of external forcing of the atmosphere by stellar insolation, KELT-1b has an atmosphere most like that of other brown dwarfs.
